War on weeds at Wellington Vale

 

GLENRAC will host a short field day for landholders in the Wellington Vale district next Wednesday 18th November at the Tent Hill Hall. The field day will launch GLENRAC’s 25thAnniversary Landcare Grant project targeting weed control on private and public land to reduce threats to biodiversity from the spread on invasive weeds.

Project Manager Pamela Benton will outline the opportunities available for landholders to participate on this project. This will include the provision of chemicals to undertake control activities. The primary target area will be the Wellington Vale Road between Deepwater and Emmaville and tributary roads including Torrington Rd, Rayners Rd, Strachan Rd and Newsome’s Rd.

If you are a landholder in this area you are encouraged to attend to find out more about the assistance that is currently available. GLENRAC also has funding available for weed control on private land that adjoins Glen Innes Severn Council managed roadside areas that have been identified and Medium and High conservation value. Pamela will also be able to answer questions on eligibility and assistance available under this project.

GLENRAC has invited representatives from the New England Weeds Authority (NEWA) to attend the field day and they will present information on common weeds of the area and tips for control. NEWA now carry out the weed management and control functions on behalf of Glen Innes Severn Council. The NEWA team will be bring the weeds resources trailer and will have a range of weeds on display to raise awareness of known weeds and potential threats such as Tropical Soda Apple.

Eden Sutherland from the Northern Tablelands Local Land Services will also be on hand to discuss training courses available for land managers to control vertebrate pest animals. These courses include the use of 1080 and pindone as well as new training available for the use and purchase of candid pest ejectors and 1080 capsules for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

GLENRAC staff Jennie Coldham and Kylie Falconer will also discuss opportunities to apply for funding for on-ground projects, including the planning and development of your projects now so that you are ready when applications open for future funding rounds. GLENRAC staff will also discuss services available through GLENRAC to assist with planning projects including preparation of property maps, how to use a GPS and GPS units GLENRAC has available to loan out to land managers.
